Maria del Puerto 'Puertin' Burritt was born in Mexico and grew up in El Paso, Texas. She graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University before attending Notre Dame Law School. While at Notre Dame, Puertin was president of the Hispanic Law Student Association and founded the Immigration Law Clinic, assisting underprivileged, undocumented immigrants and refugees. She also participated in the Inter-American Sustainable Development Law Moot Court Competition in Bogota, Colombia, as well as the Journal of International and Comparative Law. Following law school, she worked in oil and gas litigation assisting with multimillion-dollar case resolutions for oil rig and trucking accidents. Puertin remains involved in her Latino community as a member of the Mexican American Bar Association, and continues to develop her trial advocacy skills as a member of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association and the Houston Young Lawyers Association. Formerly Ms. Fernandez Sanchez, Puertin married her law school classmate and fellow attorney Reed Burritt after law school and they have resided in Houston, Texas, since 2014 with their dog, Princess.
